The creation of a new character is a long, collaborative process, with an illustrator like myself working closely with an agency and creative director.

The Collaborative Character Design Process

Seeing that character completed and launched is certainly a fulfilling moment. Like a new toy, the creative team starts putting the character through its paces: different poses, different situations, different expressions and different packaging shapes and sizes.

As we head into the holiday season, I’ll be sharing some of the different places we’ve taken Captain Bob and Crunchy the Parrot for Pirate’s Booty.

From Concept to CPG: Creating Captain Bob and Crunchy’s Halloween Look

Halloween gave us a particularly fun opportunity.

Captain Bob and Crunchy grabbed their pumpkin basket and headed out for some door-to-door trick-or-treat hijinks. Bob got to play the part of a spooky but friendly Halloween pirate, while the characters helped transform the familiar Pirate’s Booty package for the season.
