Can AI replace a commercial illustrator? That’s a question more businesses are asking as artificial intelligence becomes part of the creative process. The answer depends on the project, the goals and how the artwork will be used.
Artificial intelligence has become another tool available to artists and designers. It can generate ideas quickly, create reference images and help explore different concepts. Many creative professionals are already using it in one way or another.
Whether AI can replace a commercial illustrator depends on the project.
If you’re looking for quick concept art or a rough visual, AI may be enough. If you’re building a brand, updating product packaging or working with a licensed character, the job usually requires much more than generating an image.
Commercial illustration is built around communication. Art directors provide feedback. Marketing teams request changes. Legal departments review artwork. Packaging designers make adjustments. The illustration often goes through several rounds of revisions before it’s approved.
Consistency is another factor. A brand character has to look the same on every package, advertisement and promotion. That’s one reason companies continue to work with experienced illustrators. Maintaining an established look requires judgment as well as technical skill.
AI also raises questions about copyright, ownership and training data. Many companies want to know exactly where their artwork came from and who owns the finished piece. Working directly with a professional illustrator provides that clarity.
Technology will continue to change, just as it has throughout my career. Pencils gave way to computers. Digital painting replaced many traditional techniques. AI is simply the newest tool. The goal is still the same: create artwork that supports the brand and communicates with customers.

• Should I use AI or hire an illustrator? Hire an illustrator, but sometimes a very small budget and short time line might require the use of stock images or AI. However, there is never a replacement with the actual real and authentic human that can listen and generate original illustations. Working with another human with communication and actual interaction to bring your project and brand to life is priceless. AI can be very frustrating to get the exact look and image you want, and most settle for whatever is decides to generate. This is not a creative or intelligent way to showcase your client’s product, service or ideas!
• Can AI create brand characters? I’m sure AI creates beautiful characters and “art” however stricter laws are protecting artists, and AI images can NOT be copywrited or protected.
• Who owns AI-generated artwork? No one knows who actually owns AI generated art as it was taken by millions of existing artwork done by human characters.
• Can AI match an existing mascot? No not exactly, but close. When it comes to a brands character and branding, the EXACT look and FEEL of the character’s personality, looks, expressions all have to be carefully worked out.
• Why do companies still hire illustrators? Companies still hire illustrators for the human contact, authenticity, and being real. I believe that choosing the illustrator, buy browsing online listing sites, such as the Directory of Illustration and the Workbook, or online social sites such as LinkedIn can be much more effectively develop custom illustrations that can be copywritten and protected as a company’s brand, logo, and identity.
If you’re deciding between AI-generated artwork and custom illustration, I’d be happy to discuss your project and help you choose the approach.
